Disaster Relief

All informal settlements in South Africa have one scourge to reckon with-Fire. The shacks are built too closely together, are often constructed from highly inflammable material, open fire or candles are used to cook and illuminate and fire fighters cannot easily get to a fire when it occurs.

Our ‘Homes To Grow” foster home is constructed to all the fire retarding standards that are laid down by the South African building industry. However as we share the township with often illegal shackdwellers, one of our trustees is a member of a group of NGO’s who, by education and planning are seeking to prevent fires and will try to alleviate suffering when they do occur.
